Mmakgosi Anita Tau is an award-winning writer-director from Botswana based in Syracuse, New York. She holds an M.F.A. in Film from Syracuse University and works across poetry, memoir, fiction film, and documentary. Her work has reached audiences in Africa, Europe, and North America through festivals, workshops, and online publications. She founded Kwalang; The Writers Kiln, an online writers residency, Mmakgosi Live, an interdisciplinary arts initiative to de-stigmatize mental illness and co-founded Sekei Girls, a mentorship program. Tau was selected by the US Department of State for the University of Iowa International Writing Program Women’s Creative Mentorship Program, awarded the British Council/Prince Claus Mobility Fund, the Bryan Buckley Award, and two Creative Opportunity Grants. Tau is a 2022 Mandela Washington Fellowship Fellow, a recipient of The Donald and Genie Rice Residency for filmmakers at Yaddo and a 2023 Screenwriting Fellow at Headlands Center for the Arts.
